10 spooky halloween experiments
1. Oozing pumpkin volcano - Put 2 spoons of baking soda and a drop of dish soap inside a small pumpkin or orange cup, then pour in green-coloured vinegar. The science: an acid-base reaction makes carbon dioxide gas that foams out.
2. Ghost balloons - Draw a ghost face on a white balloon. Put baking soda in the balloon and vinegar in a bottle, stretch the balloon over the neck and tip it in. The ghost inflates by itself. The science: carbon dioxide gas.
3. Dancing ghosts - Cut small ghosts from tissue paper. Rub a balloon on your hair and hold it above them - the ghosts jump up. The science: static electricity.
4. Witch's brew colour change - Boil red cabbage and use the purple water as a "potion". Add lemon juice and it turns pink; add baking soda and it turns green. The science: pH indicators.
5. Slimy monster goo - Mix 2 cups of cornflour with 1 cup of green-coloured water. Punch it fast and it feels solid; hold it gently and it oozes. The science: a non-Newtonian fluid.
6. Floating ghosts - Draw a ghost with a dry-erase marker on a ceramic plate and slowly pour water around it. The ghost lifts off and floats. The science: the ink doesn't stick to the plate or dissolve in water.
7. Spooky lava lamp - Fill a jar with oil, top up with orange-coloured water and drop in an effervescent tablet. The science: oil and water don't mix, and gas bubbles carry the colour up and down.
8. Frozen spooky hand - Fill a glove with red-coloured water, freeze it overnight, then let kids watch it melt. The science: states of matter.
9. Candy dissolving race - Drop the same sweet into water, vinegar and oil and see which dissolves fastest. The science: solubility.
10. Glowing jar lantern - Stick a paper bat on a jar of water with a few drops of milk and shine a phone torch from below. The science: light scatters in tiny milk particles.
