Diwali is the festival of lights and colours, which makes it perfect for science. These 8 activities use simple home items, are cracker-free and safe, and teach kids the science behind the celebration. An adult should be around for each one.
8 diwali science activities
1. Rangoli colour chromatography - Draw a thick dot with a washable sketch pen on a coffee-filter strip and dip the end in water. The colour splits into a rainbow. The science: inks are mixtures of different colours.
2. Why does a diya float? - Float clay and steel bowls in a tub of water and test which ones sink. The science: buoyancy and density.
3. Lava-lamp lanterns - Fill a jar with oil, top up with coloured water and drop in an effervescent tablet, then decorate the jar as a lantern. The science: oil and water don't mix.
4. Candle and jar experiment - An adult lights a tea-light on a plate of water and covers it with a glass jar. The flame goes out and the water rises. The science: fire needs oxygen.
5. Glowing jars (no flame) - Put a phone torch or battery fairy lights under a jar of water with a few drops of milk. The science: light scatters in the tiny milk particles, like sunlight in the sky.
6. Colour-mixing rangoli - Using only red, yellow and blue powder, ask kids to make every other colour. The science: primary and secondary colours.
7. Fizzy rangoli - Spread baking soda in a rangoli pattern, then drip coloured vinegar on it with a dropper. The science: an acid-base reaction.
8. Static diya flames - Cut paper flames and make them "dance" with a balloon rubbed on hair. The science: static electricity.
Diwali safety tips for kids
- Keep kids away from lit diyas and candles unless an adult is holding them.
- Use LED diyas and fairy lights for kids' decorations.
- Keep a bucket of water nearby when real diyas are lit.
